Our Culture, Our Places, Our Stories, Our Way

(Outback Arts – Funded by Indigenous Languages and Arts)

Delivering on the aspirations of the Aboriginal community in the Outback Arts region, this project will use augmented reality to record the stories, traditions and history of sites of cultural significance as told by the traditional knowledge holders who have shared and maintained these sites for thousands of years.

Traditionally Aboriginal people passed knowledge through songlines and story-telling, this project is a contemporary version of this tradition. Community consultation and our strong relationship with the Aboriginal community identified the need for us to deliver a project that specifically addresses the need for stories and practices to be documented and passed on using traditional tried and tested methods. Our community have told us that they have a strong desire to hear, learn and know cultural stories and to learn the local history.

A strong Elder and community engagement process will involve knowledge holders to workshop the films content. Donna and the Elders are important cultural knowledge keepers of the area and are uniquely situated to reflect on the history, importance and stories of that make this such a special, spiritual and culturally important areas.

The completed films will be converted to augmented reality which will provide an interactive experience of a real-world environment, this will allow visitors to hear the stories and see them being told as if the Elders were present in real time. A travelling exhibition will launch the experience with the QR code which attendees can scan to join the experience. The filming will all take place on country at the sites with the Elders and will see them walking through and explaining the complex formations and their cultural importance.
